FIRST INTERNATIONAL MASTERSHOT FILM FESTIVAL

A TALE OF TRIUMPHANT POZNAŃ. FILM WORKSHOPS

Jun 9, 2019

Warsztaty Powstanie Wielkopolskie

Dedicated to the Greater Poland Uprising, these film workshops were carried out over three intensive days with a group of several dozen participants and the Historical Reenactment Group Ławica Air Station. Two one-take films were produced—historical mastershots, an original and still relatively rare cinematic form.

On the first day, at the University of the Arts in Poznań, we reviewed the scripts with participants, planned the production, and organized work within specific departments: cinematography, directing, set design and costumes, production, lighting, and sound.

On the following day, the participants and organizers worked on two film sets. The first was FORT VII in Poznań—a historical and authentic location where real battles took place between insurgents and German forces during the Greater Poland Uprising. The participants learned how to prepare a film set, operate equipment, choreograph movement and action, and work with lighting and camera to achieve dynamic mastershots and nighttime scenes. They filmed in a place of great significance on the map of Poznań—an original Prussian fort where the battle for the city and the nearby Ławica airport was fought and won by the insurgents in 1919.

The next day, the participants took on a more intimate film set, representing an apartment interior from 100 years ago. The story told in this film is also unique, highlighting the character of an extraordinary insurgent—Sam Sandi, a Black Cameroonian who arrived in Greater Poland with the French forces during World War I and fought alongside the people of the region. The interiors of the Teatr Nowy in Poznań were used to create the set and backdrop for the second mastershot.

Excellent organization, smooth collaboration, and the genuine chemistry between everyone involved made the workshops a tremendous source of inspiration, a well of knowledge for the participants, and a unifying experience for the Poznań film community.
